The early years of education lay the foundation for a child’s knowledge system, which continues to expand in the following years. During this period, essential cognitive and practical skills are developed, which are crucial for further learning and everyday activities. A key factor in quality education is the speech development of students. The level of cognitive development in young learners plays a fundamental role in the learning process, particularly in shaping mental functions such as perception, attention, memory, and thinking.
In Grade 1, special attention is given to:
Correct pronunciation
Expanding and activating vocabulary
Mastering grammatically correct and coherent speech
These acquired language skills contribute to the holistic development of children, especially in improving their communication abilities. The school’s teaching staff follows the New Ukrainian School (NUS) curriculum, incorporating its key elements into the planning and creation of educational materials tailored to different age groups.
Literacy Instruction
Literacy education in Grade 1 consists of two main periods:
Pre-ABC Period – This transitional stage moves students from oral language to written language. The focus is on developing phonetic skills, such as:
Dividing words into syllables
Identifying stressed syllables
Understanding the sound structure of Ukrainian words
Isolating individual sounds in words
Recognizing vowels and consonants
Distinguishing between hard and soft consonants
Practicing correct pronunciation
ABC Period – During this stage, students learn the letters of the Ukrainian alphabet and develop the skills to read and write in Ukrainian.
A crucial component of language development in Grade 1 is preparing students for reading and writing by strengthening fine motor skills, hand coordination, and early literacy exercises.
Teaching Approach
Considering the time students spend in school, we use a comprehensive teaching approach. Through integrated lessons, we combine elements of mathematics, natural sciences, and social studies with language learning. This makes learning engaging and clear for young students, supporting their overall intellectual and cognitive development.
Additionally, we actively use an online classroom platform where students can access extra materials, assignments, and interactive exercises that reinforce classroom learning.
Students learn to read using V. Fediienko’s ABC book and practice writing in specially designed, author-created workbooks, which help reinforce reading and writing skills.
While at school, children have opportunities to communicate in their native language, interact with peers, play, and develop their social and communication skills in a natural and supportive environment.
All necessary textbooks and workbooks for student learning are ordered and delivered from Ukraine, ensuring authentic and high-quality educational materials.
