It happened that, against our will, we suddenly found ourselves far beyond the borders of our homeland. Our children adapted quite quickly to the new environment, but at the same time, they began to forget their origins, their country, and their language. In such circumstances, we must make every effort to ensure that our children feel like a part of the Ukrainian nation, speak its language, and know the history, culture, and traditions of their homeland.
“Through historical memory, a person becomes an individual, a people becomes a nation, and a country becomes a state,” — Ukrainian historian Mykhailo Hrushevskyi. It is up to us, the adults, to ensure that our children do not lose their roots and grow into well-rounded individuals. Just as a tree cannot grow without roots, a person cannot thrive when disconnected from their nation, its past, its culture, traditions, and language. Otherwise, they become like a tumbleweed, drifting wherever the wind takes them.
To deepen students’ interest in the history of their native land and help them learn more about Ukraine, we have introduced an additional class — “History of Ukraine”. The main goal of this class is to cultivate a sense of belonging to one’s homeland, its history, and traditions, and to strengthen national identity and pride in one’s cultural heritage.
“He who does not know his past is unworthy of his future.” That is why the History of Ukraine is one of the key and most important subjects in our school. In these lessons, we explore the past to better understand the present. The teacher presents Ukraine’s history using simple and accessible facts, metaphors, research from historians, and comparisons between past and present.
Interactive methods are an essential part of the lessons. The teacher uses digital resources like presentations and engages students in solving puzzles, crosswords, and assembling maps of Ukraine as jigsaw puzzles.
Each topic is reinforced with thematic activities such as games, workshops, or creative tasks. The structure of the lessons is designed to help students not only learn historical facts but also understand the culture, traditions, and customs of the Ukrainian people.
Children love to talk more than they love to listen, so our history lessons are built around dialogue. Through studying the history of Ukraine, students will come to appreciate its uniqueness and will feel proud of their country.
Our goal is to carefully educate and develop children in a fun way. We strive learning process into a bright.
